寶石的生成
寶石的生成需要數百萬年以上，並且配合適當的環境與地質等條件。因此寶石是非常珍貴與難得的，可以說是上帝的禮物。一般來說，被稱之為天然寶石的，代表該寶石是從自然的大地中生成的，而非從人工實驗是產出。而因為是天然生成，即便為同一種寶石，每顆寶石的顏色都不盡相同。天然寶石也都有可能有些微內含物或天然紋路存在，這樣的內含物除了代表這顆寶石特別的生成經歷以外，更是天然的證明。
寶石的定義
寶石的定義需具備以下三個條件：美觀性，稀有性，堅固性。寶石的第一條件必須是美麗，要有讓人想擁有與收藏的欲望。寶石的第二條件是稀有，俗話說：物以稀為貴。例如彩色鑽石，即因為產量較白色鑽石稀少，因此成為寶石收藏家爭相收藏的對象。寶石的第三要件，在地球上許多美麗的礦物之所以無法被定義為＂寶石＂，與堅固性、耐用性、穩定性，有相當大的關係。倘若穩定性不高，可能在受光照或是接觸化學元素以後，就失去原先美麗的因素。且自古以來，寶石皆做成珠寶首飾配戴在人的身上，若非耐久，很難經起配戴時的摩擦或碰撞。例如螢石，雖然色彩多變絢麗，但卻因為莫氏硬度僅有４，無法鑲嵌於珠寶首飾。
淺談寶石優化
在古代，僅有皇宮貴族才能擁有美麗的寶石，例如古代楚國發現和氏璧的卞和，為了向君王獻上稀世珍寶和氏璧，不惜被砍斷雙腿。隨著科技與社會文明的進步，美學品味的提升，過去遙不可及的珍貴寶石，不再是貴族、富豪、名人的特權。而為了供應市場的大量需求，加上科技進步的配合，許多提升寶石穩定性、
堅固性的處理方法也就因應而生。除了避免地球上珍貴而有限的寶石資源浪費外，更能讓大眾以親切的價格取得美麗的寶石。
最廣為人知的寶石優化莫過於祖母綠浸泡天然植物油，浸油的祖母綠更顯得光彩美麗，而這樣的處理方式是全世界所認可的。另外，為了使顏色更加的穩定，市場上絕大部分的剛玉皆有經過加熱優化處理。優化的寶石，幾乎能永久的維持該特性，不因時空或環境而改變。 目前市場上絕少存在未經優化處理的寶石，除非是年代十分久遠的古董珠寶之外，或是拍賣會場上特別註明未經加熱處理的珍貴寶石，當然由於未經處理的寶石非常的稀少珍貴，價格自然也十分的高昂，且大部分僅能於拍賣會場裡覓得，一般消費者難以親近。
目前國際寶石界對於寶石的優化處理採認可態度，也因行之有年而廣泛被消費者接受，但做生意貴在誠信，因此寶石界一致主張在銷售之前需明白的告訴消費者。除此之外，珠寶業者也須負擔起教育消費者的責任，畢竟在這個寶石資源日漸開採殆盡的時代，兼具環保，美麗、安全、經濟的寶石，才是消費者最好的選擇。
